Summary and Quiz

Get a refresher on what we’ve learned about the migration and transfer services offered by AWS, and take a short quiz to validate our knowledge.

We'll cover the following

We explored various AWS services that streamline data migration, transfer, and processing, making it easier to move our applications and data to the AWS cloud. The first step is to plan the migration according to the existing infrastructure and move our applications, files, databases, and datasets accordingly.

Summary

Here is a brief summary of how each service helps in migration and transfer:

  • Application Discovery Service:  We scan our on-premises environment, gathering details about our servers, applications, and dependencies. This information helps us understand the current infrastructure and plan the migration strategy effectively.

  • Application Migration Service (AMS): AMS simplifies large-scale application migrations to the AWS cloud. It orchestrates the migration process, minimizing downtime and ensuring smooth application transfer.

  • Database Migration Service (DMS): DMS ensures seamless database migration. It offers a secure and efficient way to migrate our databases to AWS. It supports various database engines and migration workflows, allowing us to choose the best approach.

  • DataSync: DataSync helps keep data synchronized between on-premises storage and AWS storage solutions. This is useful for scenarios where we need to maintain a local copy of our data for compliance or performance reasons.

  • Migration Hub: Migration Hub is like a migration command center. It acts as a central console for managing and tracking all migration activities across various AWS and partner migration tools. It provides visibility into the overall migration progress and simplifies the management of complex migrations.

  • Snow Family: The Snow Family offers a range of ruggedized devices (Snowcone, Snowball, and Snowmobile) for securely transferring massive datasets (from terabytes to exabytes) to and from the AWS cloud. These devices can function offline, making them ideal for situations with limited or unreliable internet connectivity. Snowball Edge, a member of the Snow Family, also provides on-device processing capabilities for local data analysis before transferring it to the cloud.

  • Transfer Family: The Transfer Family offers services like AWS Transfer for SFTP, which allows you to securely transfer files between on-premises servers and AWS S3 storage using the SFTP protocol.
