We now approach the cryptography of personal devices from a different perspective by reviewing the cryptographic support offered by a particular device platform. We’ll consider Apple’s operating system iOS 9.0 (for convenience, we subsequently refer to this simply as iOS), which is widely deployed on Apple devices, including the iPhone and iPad. This platform makes extensive use of cryptography for many different aspects of iOS security.
