Introduction: information security in software systems

The rapid progress of information and communication technology (ICT) continuously intensifies the interest in the two disciplines of security and privacy. At this point, we introduce the most important terms and concepts of information security, which we’ll use later in order to describe how security can be achieved in distributed systems. There’s a clear distinction between a security goal and a security mechanism: the security mechanism is a function that helps to achieve security goals.
