Competitors and Partners
Learn strategies to analyze and outsmart competitors and collaborate with partners with effective affiliate marketing to promote mutual success.
Competition never ceases to exist. Even if we start something from scratch with no competitors, eventually we’ll find ourself surrounded with competitors, especially when the trade we are in is profitable. As SEO practitioners, we can learn from the competition but also have to be mindful of unscrupulous players who engage in black hat techniques to undermine search engine rankings for others.
Learning from the competition
When it comes to SEO, remember the age old proverb "keep your friend close and your enemy closer." Pay attention to the strategies employed by our competition and the rankings they hold. Here’s are some of the items we should keep our eye on with respect to our competition:
Keyword analysis
Competitor analysis can help us to understand the keywords our competitors are targeting and how they are ranking for those keywords. We can use tools like Google Keyword Planner and SEMrush to find relevant keywords and analyze the keyword landscape. This can help us to identify opportunities for optimization, target the right keywords and improve our rankings with respect to our competitors’.
Content strategy analysis
Analyze the content on our competitor’s website and see how they are using keywords and other optimization techniques. Look at the topics they are covering, the type of content they are creating, the cadence of publishing fresh content, and how they are engaging with their audience. Use this information to create better content that stands out from our competitors. Another technique is to search the competitor’s site on Google using site queries (site:domain.com)
and observe how the query results show up on Google. We can see the total pages for our competitor, meta descriptions, title tags, images and just the overall content quality and strategy.
Backlink analysis
Use tools like Ahrefs and Moz to see the backlinks our competitors have and the authority of those sites, top keywords driving traffic, recent trends on performance, and any similar sites linking to them that we may not have been aware of before. This can help us to identify potential link building opportunities and improve our own backlink profile.
Technical SEO
Check the competitor’s website for technical SEO issues, such as broken links, slow load times, and poor mobile responsiveness. These issues can impact a website’s rankings and user experience. Identify areas where our competitor exhibits weakness and use them to our advantage by improving metrics for similar content on our website. We can use online tools/services to crawl our competitors website and learn how it is structured.
Constant vigilance
Don’t let the guard down, and continuously monitor our competitors to see what changes they are making and how their rankings change over time. Use tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console to track our own rankings and traffic. This will give us a good idea of how our efforts are impacting our search engine visibility.

Negative SEO attack
Negative SEO refers to unethical or malicious tactics used to lower the ranking of a website in search engine results. The goal of these tactics is to harm the visibility and credibility of the targeted website. Once upon a time, before Google became more sophisticated, a well-known example of negative SEO in the industry was the Google Bombing technique. This was a practice where individuals would create numerous links pointing to a particular website with specific keywords in an attempt to manipulate search rankings. For instance, a group of people might create a large number of links with the anchor text worst company
pointing to a competitor’s website. This would result in that website ranking for the search term worst company
in Google, which could significantly harm the reputation of the targeted company. However, it is worth noting that Google has made significant advancements in its search algorithms to detect and penalize negative SEO tactics, so these techniques are much less effective today.
There are some examples of companies that became target of their own black hat SEO efforts. Though in these cases, the perpetrators were the companies themselves but the same attack could have been mounted against them by other players in their industry. Let’s see some examples below:
Interflora
Interflora is a well-known UK-based flower delivery service. In 2013, Interflora’s website was temporarily penalized by Google for violating the search engine’s quality guidelines. Google discovered that the company had been participating in a large-scale paid link scheme, which involved paying various websites and also influencers to include links back to the Interflora website in an attempt to improve its search engine visibility. Google viewed these practices as manipulative and in violation of its guidelines, leading to the imposition of a penalty on the Interflora website.
JC Penny
Another example is of the American retailer JCPenney. In 2011, the company was caught using link farms, which are networks of low-quality websites that are created specifically for the purpose of providing backlinks to other sites. This practice goes against Google’s guidelines and can result in penalties.
Rap Genius
Rap Genius, a lyrics and music annotation website, was affected negatively by its own SEO in 2013. TechCrunch also covered the details in this article [70]. Some of the SEO activities by Rap Genius that were deemed in violation of Google’s terms and conditions were
Link exchanging: Rap Genious exchanged links with other websites to manipulate its search engine rankings. This involved trading links with other websites in exchange for higher search engine visibility.
Link buying: Rap Genius bought links from other websites in order to boost its search engine rankings. This involved paying other websites to include links to Rap Genius on their sites.
Link scheming: Rap Genius used link schemes to manipulate search engine rankings. This involved creating artificial links to its site in order to artificially increase its search engine visibility.
Rap Genius eventually took steps to address the issue and recover from the penalty. The site cleaned up its backlink profile, removed any links that violated Google’s guidelines, and submitted a reconsideration request to Google. Eventually, Google lifted the penalty and Rap Genius was able to regain its search engine visibility and traffic.
Affiliate marketing with partners
Affiliate marketing is a performance-based marketing strategy where a company rewards affiliates for each customer brought about by the affiliate’s own marketing efforts. It is a win-win situation for both the company and the affiliates as the company gets more customers and increased brand recognition, while the affiliates earn a commission for their efforts. Affiliate marketing works by partnering with a company to promote their products or services. The affiliate is given a unique affiliate link to share with their audience. When someone clicks on the affiliate link and makes a purchase, the affiliate earns a commission on the sale. The commission rate can vary depending on the company and the product being sold. Some companies offer a flat fee for each sale, while others offer a percentage of the total sale amount. Some of the ways a platform or website’s search engine rankings can improve by running an affiliate program are as follows:
Backlinks: Affiliate marketing can help generate backlinks to a website, which is a key factor in search engine optimization. Backlinks from high-quality and relevant websites can help increase a website’s search engine visibility and rankings. Some companies business model relies entirely on affiliate sales and they can be a source of high quality backlinks. Similarly, in the creator economy, affiliate sales are an important source of revenue for YouTubers and influencers on other social media platform.
Relevant content: Affiliate marketing can provide a source of relevant and high-quality content for a website. This can help increase the relevance and authority of a website, which can result in better search engine visibility and rankings.
Long-tail keywords: Affiliate marketing can help target long-tail keywords, which are longer and more specific phrases that are less competitive in search engines. By targeting these keywords, a website can improve its search engine rankings and visibility.
User engagement: Affiliate marketing can help increase user engagement on a website, which can be a factor in search engine optimization. User engagement metrics, such as time on site and pages per session, can help indicate to search engines that a website is valuable and relevant to its audience.
