Exes
Exes are rarely used. For a long time, this was because browsers lacked support for the typographical ‘magic’ required to determine the exact size of an ex
.
At the time of this writing, they are supported accross all major browsers. However, browsers implement the dimension of the ex
a little differently.
e.g Internet explorer used to resolve 1ex as 0.5em, independently of the font family.
Ideally an ex
should be equal to the size of the height of the lowercase letter x in the default font size being used.
That’s the important bit you should know about for now. You’ll probably not use this unit as often.
There are other amazing options we’ve explored and will still explore. Use those!
