At this point, you should have already done your research and have a salary in mind. However, before you make an offer to a candidate, you should consider the following:

  • The salaries of their peers at the company, so you can make sure that they’re paid as fairly as possible compared to their peers

  • What other companies in your area might be offering for similar roles (this may involve some research)

Your offer needs to try and satiate these two categories, but this can be difficult in practice. Often, you’ll need to overpay someone compared to their peers to get them in the door. Then, it’s your responsibility as a manager to make sure their peers square out with them over time.
